To "put things in perspective" means to see them from an objective viewpoint (or one that is generally different from your own and not based upon your emotions). For example: A young person may be emotionally devastated by a breakup with a boyfriend or girlfriend. The best way for that person to get over the hurt, is to see the relationship from the viewpoint of his or her whole life, rather than just for the present. While no one should deny that a breakup always result in hurt feelings and a sense of loss, anyone who has lived through a challenging breakup will tell you even though times might be tough at the moment, it is not the end of your life, and the best thing to do is continue living and dreaming of how great your future could be. That would be a great example of "putting things in perspective". In this lecture, I share another story that will hopefully give you a greater depth of insight into exactly what I mean here.
