Episode 599: Arnie Arnesen Attitude November 19 2024
Manage episode 451055112 series 3371230
Part 1:
We talk with Phil Galewitz, senior correspondent for KFF Health News.
We discuss the problem of the inaccessibility of health care, even if people are 'covered' through a government plan. Specifically, we talk about residents of Vermont, many of whom are unable to get get health care because there are not enough providers, and the state regulates insurance prices heavily. Hospitals are regulated. We look at many of the problems, and possible outcomes and solutions.
Part 2:
We talk with Jonathan Shaw, managing editor of the Harvard Law magazine.
We discuss the problem of unaffordable housing. Many of the rising costs are driven by climate change, which causes insurance companies to raise their rates for home insurance to an unprecedented level. There are not enough homes to accommodate all who need them. With the outlook of mass deportations of migrants, many of whom work in the construction industry (40% of construction workers) this problem will only grow. Local land regulations are also an issue. This includes building zoning that restricts new homes/multiple-occupancy homes/ADU's, etc. What could be possible solutions are discussed.
