After Kevin’s miraculous recovery from an intense bout of the flu, we are BACK to talk about a controversy that slammed the Vsauce2 channel recently. This week, we’re recounting the epic tale of Kevin’s battle against YouTube’s age restriction.

To get the full story on what we’re talking about this week, take a look at the infamous video on Soviet Science that sparked the controversy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhSBQOTW018&ab_channel=Vsauce2

If you’ve already seen it, the gist of the whole debacle is this: YouTube age restricted the video. That meant the only people that could see it were people who were above the age of 18 AND were signed into their YouTube account. Why did they restrict it? We have no idea. We talk about the complete lack of shocking content in the video, the ACTUAL demographic it catered to, and the colossally negative impact age restriction can have on a video.

Then, we get into the nitty gritty about this particular struggle. We talk specifics about receiving a flag on a video, the intricacies of post-COPPA regulations, and the actual process of getting your video reviewed – this time, YouTube dropped the ball on all of them.

Naturally, Kevin tried to reverse the restriction. He details the shocking number of hoops he had to jump through just to get a response from YouTube, and the incredibly underwhelming result when he finally got it. We get into all the fixes we tried to remedy the situation, what actually worked, and the inevitable fallout that came with it.

During this entire process, Matt fired back on Twitter with a thread showcasing an absurd number of videos with much more graphic content that received zero restrictions whatsoever. Kevin talks about the incredibly incorrect reasoning YouTube gave for the restriction, and Matt emphasizes the real-life consequences of an ordeal like this.

We do finish out the episode on a somewhat positive note, though, as we look to the rapidly approaching new year. Kevin talks about overcoming his content-halting illness, Matt talks about the increasingly efficient process of his voiceover work, and we briefly look back on the catalog of content we released this year.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in live this week, and a special thank you to our supportive patrons. We’ll be back again next week!
