S2 Episode 7: Lobbying governments to recognise the importance of fitness for long term health with Darina Dunne
Manage episode 441945650 series 3588282
Today's guest is Darina Dunne.
Darina is a cornerstone in the Irish fitness community and has probably done more for the industry than any of us will ever know.
Darina and her husband Jamie are responsible for the filthy 150. This is Ireland's largest crossfit competition and at one stage was one of the biggest sanctioned Crossfit events in Europe.
They run multiple gyms around the country and now Darina is lobbying the Irish Government through the Irish Physical Activity Alliance. Their goal is to make gym memberships tax refundable as part of the Med1 health expense form. Darina is doing all of this while having a full time job in the pharmaceutical industry, she has unbelievable drive and is the perfect person to make this happen.
Darina is armed with all the facts around the importance of fitness and exercise to improve the population's health and how governments can actually save money in the long term by keeping people out of hospital beds and nursing homes, all while promoting health & exercise.
We are an ageing population and the numbers do not add up when it comes to the management of our elderly. We simply cannot provide the beds that are needed to meet the supply but Darina and the IPAA know that exercise, fitness and education are the only way to combat this problem in the long term.
Hope you enjoy the chat!
