In this episode of “Beyond Addiction”, Episode-#109, “Relapse and Substitution”, with Ales Carle and Barnett from Gulf Breeze Recovery, a non-12-step holistic drug and alcohol rehab in Florida, we talk about the frustration for the individual and their family with relapse and substitution.
Alex shares her journey from relapses to recovery. Everybody’s story is different. Barnett speaks of the people who have come to Gulf Breeze Recovery and have been to multiple treatment centers or maybe one treatment center multiple times. They lose hope and the family loses hope, and to a certain extent, the family has somewhat earned the right to give up. They don't understand why it's not working, their loved one has been to treatment, and they're still choosing to use. One of the issues that we've been talking about in different podcasts is what people experience with the traditional model of treatment. And the analogy that I want to use is the one of a plant. In that analogy, you see only above the surface. That’s the using, the scheming, the manipulation, the hiding, everything that goes on with a person that is suffering from a substance use disorder.

The roots indicate internal unrest. One of these roots might be depression; one may represent anxiety, even something as simple as boredom, and as serious as trauma could be one of them. In traditional treatment, they are chopping off the plant. Chopping off the observable behavior of addiction. But the problem is that when we just concentrate on the observable behaviors of addiction, we don't address the internal unrest, the root cause. We all know what happens when you have a plant with fertile soil, and firm roots in place; well, that plant typically grows back.
However, when we focus on the root, and we can get the root to start to die away, to wither away, then suddenly, the need to find something outside as a solution whether it be drugs, alcohol, or whatever goes away. And that's what makes us unique, we're helping to get that person to the root cause.
Our non-traditional non-12 step, holistic approach to alcohol and drug treatment recognizes the effectiveness of people rediscovering their innate health and core resilience that resides in each of us.

About Gulf Breeze Recovery: At Gulf Breeze Recovery, we treat people more as guests than as clients to be kept. This is why we offer amenities such as a pool with a waterfront view, a private fishing pier, and a white-sand beach area. This is just a part of what makes the atmosphere so unique at Gulf Breeze Recovery.

We believe in conducting counseling in a comfortable, welcoming environment. This encourages free thought and expression, allowing guests to explore their issues without fear or hesitation. Our programs provide more counseling hours than the industry standard, with therapy customized to meet an individual’s specific needs and goals.

We have carefully crafted and curated every aspect of our treatment so that guests can finally liberate themselves from chronic relapse. Creating a welcoming, comfortable environment filled with compassionate and highly qualified counselors and therapists has resulted in one of the nation’s most effective addiction treatment facilities.
