On today’s episode of Life after Kids, we’re discussing the power of epigenetics to affect both our health and the way we age. Epigenetics is a term used to describe how the environment can influence gene expression. Our environment and life style choices influence what genes are expressed and can make a difference in whether or not the gene is expressed in a harmful way. This is why our daily choices are so important in regards to our health, well-being, and longevity. For example, even if an individual carries a gene associated with a certain health issue, (like breast cancer), it does not mean they are 100% likely to develop it.

It is never too late to start taking the steps necessary to improve our health, as our bodies are capable of reversing the effects of bad habits. Because of the study of Epigenetics, we know that our environment and behavior can affect our genes either positively or negatively. Making healthy decisions requires an understanding of the long-term effects of our choices, and how they can affect our quality of life in the future. For instance, consuming large quantities of sugar increases the risk of diabetes, heart issues, Alzheimer’s, and dementia. Not getting enough sleep can lower our immune system and cause us to gain weight. Plus, recent studies show that daily exercise can reduce the risk of cancer. It’s so easy to be tempted by unhealthy choices day to day. It’s easy to seek immediate gratification instead of considering long term effects. Therefore, we need to know WHY and HOW our everyday choices affect our health and longevity. Epigenetics is the answer.

We have agency, power, and control over our health and our aging. Simple things we can do daily like stress management, eating well, moving our body, connecting with others, and prioritizing sleep will improve our health and longevity by positively impacting our gene expression. Learning about your body and understanding your choices in regards to health is empowering. It is important to make choices that are right for you and your family, and to take the time to learn about your body in order to make informed decisions.
