E77 How To Set Boundaries With Family
Manage episode 424963531 series 3407770
In this episode, Christy Rutherford discusses how to set boundaries with family for people who struggle with people pleasing and sacrificing themselves to make others happy. Christy argues that most people have difficulty saying "no'' because they want to avoid hurting others' feelings and desire approval. However, this often leads to feeling used, overwhelmed, and miserable as they continuously say "yes" to things they don't truly want to do.
Christy advises us to consider who really benefits from our "yes"- are we enabling toxic behavior or sacrificing too much of ourselves? She says saying "no" often means people pleasing less and respecting ourselves more. Christy suggests asking two questions before saying "yes": Do you want to do it? How will you feel when you do it? If the answer to either is negative, it's best to just say "no." Serving others out of obligation plants a "negative seed" that brings negative returns, while saying "yes" from a place of genuine willingness brings positive energy.
Christy encourages everyone to own their value, claim the gifts they already have, and take credit for the work they've done. She argues that companies are eager for harmonious, high-achieving women on their teams.
Overall, the episode emphasizes the importance of self-love, self-respect, and truth-telling to overcome people-pleasing tendencies and gain the clarity, confidence, and peace needed to say "no" in an authentic and impactful way.
Other subjects we covered on the show:
How women are often conditioned at a young age to please others and surrender their joy.
Why serving out of obligation is not a "good seed" and does not bring positive returns.
The importance of owning one's values, gifts, and achievements in order to command what one deserves.
How resolving one's own "baggage" helps avoid triggering others' trauma at work.
The value harmonious, high-achieving women bring to companies.
