Primary food is recognizing that we derive energy in our lives through “nutrients” other than food. You can be eating this ideal “perfect diet” (which actually doesn’t really exist) such as Whole Foods, plant based and such, but if you are not investing in these other areas of your life your health, from a holistic and whole-listic perspective - mental, emotional and physical - is going to suffer.

Chronic depression is also widespread in our society. An estimated 15 million Americans suffer from depression and about 28 million people, or one in 10, in this country take antidepressants. Many also experience frustration, anger, disappointment, sadness and isolation. These conditions and emotions are all cries for primary food, but instead of giving ourselves what we really need, Americans often turn to secondary food (i.e real food) for comfort and solace.
In this episode Brooke and Noa take a deep dive into the different primary foods and share what they are, specifically from our own experience in really understanding how critical they are.

When we use secondary food as a way to alleviate or suppress our hunger for primary food, the body and mind suffer. Weight gain is just one of the consequences. Diet-related disorders such as heart disease, cancer, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes are national epidemics, and one of the main reasons is because we are stuffing ourselves with secondary foods when we are really starving for primary food.
Primary foods include:
Healthy relationships
Regular physical activity (joyful movement)
Sense of purpose
Spiritual practice
Hydration
