Ebony has held key strategy and social change roles, most recently for the Australian Red Cross. We discuss Ebony's background and childhood, and the motivation behind Decade of Action, and why businesses play a critical role in addressing urgent global challenges over the next 10 years and beyond. We discuss how business has a critical role to play and needs to take more targeted and authentic action. We explore the key role of evidence in identifying critical causes, that may seem left of centre to many of the more visible issues that come top of mind. And approaches to working with influential businesses, brands, governments and movements to boldly define their purpose platform and galvanize their assets, ideas and to have a positive impact on the world. 1:05:11Today we are joined by Dr Fiona Kerr, Founder and CEO of the Neurotech Institute, and leading futurist and author Steve Sammartino in our first double header with previous guests. Fiona was interviewed in episode 11 of Real People and Steve in episode 16. This most certainly was an explosion of thinking as Fiona and Steve shared their observations of the world in chaos and what this means moving forward. We discuss a huge amount in a rollercoaster chat from digital sovereignty to how well Australia is performing at a global scale. We discuss the hunger games of the US and lessons as to how to take a longer-term perspective can be learnt from places like Finland. We ponder is Australia more like the US or Europe? And, does Australia's safe stability make us lucky or lazy? We discuss systems thinking and blind spots. What future capitalism will look like. And, the high likelihood we will just slot back into comfortable old ways, even with the pause during COVID-19 to slow down and think about better ways moving forward. 56:10Today we are joined by Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell, Director of the 3A Institute at ANU in Canberra, a collaboration with CSIRO's Data61, with the mission of building a new applied science around the management of artificial intelligence, data, technology and their impact on humanity. Genevieve is also Senior Fellow, New Technology Group at Intel, since joining Intel as a researcher to conduct ethnographic research in 1998. This is a most fascinating discussion about the world in chaos, how we are adjusting and what might come. We discuss key themes such as contact tracing and mass surveillance, and how critical it is that our communities embrace to fight COVID-19. We explore how the devastating Australian bushfires and now COVID-19 have shone the light on our vulnerabilities and segments of the community that were already falling through the cracks dealing with inequality, personal dangers and complexities, and the role of the government in supporting this. Genevieve shares her perspective on how Australia has dealt with COVID-19 compared with other parts of the world, and how it is near impossible to understand the situation without more data and stable models. Rebecca is the author of numerous books, including 'How to Talk About Climate Change in a Way That Makes a Difference,' Still Lucky and The World According to Y. We discuss the changes that may come from the chaos of bushfires then COVID-19, some thinking around how Australia and Australians have responded well to a pandemic, and ponder 'are we still lucky?' We discuss fairness vs freedom and the likely shift in thinking towards Australia seeking a greater level of self-sufficiency moving forward, and the wider impact on our cultural values. 1:06:20Today we are joined by Brent Hill, the Executive Director of Marketing at the South Australian Tourism Commission. The leader behind recent campaigns 'book them out' responding to the devastating bushfires, and SA TV sharing content from across South Australia, responding to the 'stay at home' COVID-19 pandemic. Brent could have never imagined being involved in a tourism campaign to encourage people to stay at home, but that's the situation at the moment and for the foreseeable future. How does a tourism team deal with such a predicament? This is a most fascinating discussion about marketing and leadership in a topsy turvy world, including empowering the team to ever seek inspiration, and to unlock Edward de Bono's thinking caps, and not overusing the black hat, encouraging tourism operators to share their story through compelling content, that nowadays does not always need to be of the highest production standards. And, stimulating joy in challenging times is critical. Encouraging people to support local producers through online purchasing of artisan wine, gin, food and other products is important to build connection, and to build a huge appetite for travelling South Australia's wonderful regions once the restrictions are removed. A discussion about marketing and joy in a world of uncertainty and chaos. Real People is a podcast hosted by Jason Dunstone, the founder and managing director of Square Holes. How will consumer behaviours change as a result of COVID 19? Adam shares some insight as to why leaders should stop listening to their customers, but rather be confident and true to the brand and what makes it distinctive. 1:07:30Today we are joined by Olivia Dryden, jeweller and taxidermy artist. Since graduating from Adelaide College of the Arts in 2014, Olivia's career has advanced significantly and she has receive acclaim and recognition for her work. You can find Olivia's website at oliviadrydenjewellery.com Olivia has travelled to India in 2015 for the Helpmann Academy 'Sanskriti Kendra Residency'. The six week residency was an opportunity to escape, be ripped out of her comfort zone and thrown into a world of culture, colour, religion, contrast and overall, just an amazing country. Olivia was also recently awarded one of the inaugural Helpmann Academy Fellowships, supported by the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation valued at up to $20,000 each. This fellowship allowed Olivia to spend three months in London establishing connections and networking opportunities to further develop skills in taxidermy and jewellery making. Olivia's beautiful art comes from a curiosity with death, which arose when she started researching the Victorian Memento Mori period from the 15th to 18th century. She admired the symbolism they used to depict death, like the skull-and-crossbones and the hourglass. She was especially interested in the jewellery that was made using the deceased's hair, and the post-mortem photography. She loved how such a taboo subject, death, could be shown in such a beautiful way. Olivia has had a solo exhibition at 'Life After Death' at Hill Smith Gallery and her jewellery is available in many jewellery stores. We go on a wonderful journey from a childhood loving art, and how Olivia's thirst to keep learning and see the world differently continues and will ever continue. In a profession where only 2% make it, Olivia's passion, network and entrepreneurship is seeing her triumph even with the challenge that comes with life as an artist. 52:18Today we are joined by James Fergusson, the CEO of MDI (https://www.mdi-global.com) a mobile focused research company launched in 2013. MDI is based in Melbourne, with offices in Cape Town, Miami, Utah, Washington DC and recently launching their European presence from London. MDI has developed and is continuously evolving its own proprietary mobile research platform, and has worked with some of the world's largest consumer brands. This was a very enjoyable chat. I first met James back in 1994 when I started my career in market research at Frank Small and Associates in Melbourne. We were both wide-eyed young researchers, discovering market research somewhat by chance. It's nice to sit down 25 years, and eight kids later (six of these James') to chat. James has enjoyed a highly successful career in market research, including being based in Singapore for seven years in global executive roles for TNS / Kantar with a focus on technology and emerging markets. We discuss James' early days as an entrepreneurial kid mowing the lawns of neighbours to buy lollies and other joys the money brings. And, that a successful career is seldom linear or predictable, and it's best to just embrace the ride. James shares his perspective on the massive impact on research mobile phones have had over the past decade in the developed and developing world, and how this informed the strategy and innovation behind MDI. We hear about the story of MDI, and some lessons for those seeking to build a global facing business from Australia, including how to overcome our innate cultural risk aversion. A fascinating discussion about innovation in consumer insight past, present and the uncertain future. On telling his typically cool and calm dad of his plans to quit uni and go into advertising the mood changed - "don't do it!" An interesting response considering David's father was ad adman. 1:38:54Today, we are joined by Yarmila Alfonzetti. How do you innovate and reinvigorate an opera company in the era of short attention spans, the Bachelor and everyone wants to be famous talent shows? That is just the burning deck and challenging situation Yarmila was faced with when she recently took on the role as Executive Director of State Opera South Australia. If you think a podcast about opera sounds boring, then think again. Today's show is anything but boring, with insight flying a mile a minute. From Yarmila's youth playing six instruments and sneaking in to the opera house at intermission at her time at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. To insights into what makes a good culture, innovation and taking the opera to the people. How the arts in Australia is quite different to many other parts of the world. And, has a long way to go to engage new audiences and become a habitual part of life. And, perhaps no matter how much things change they perhaps stay the same. We discuss how to enjoy the Opera and hear about State Opera South Australia's latest show The Merry Widow directed by Graeme Murphy. And, Yarmila's focus on building a strong team to drive forward. 1:18:01We are joined by Teena Munn and Geoff Cobham to discuss all things not growing up boring, innovation, why the Arts matters so much to children and adults and a whole lot more. Teena and Geoff recently joined Patch Theatre as Producer and Artistic Director. I have been a director on the Board of Patch Theatre for 10 years, so this interview is particularly close to my heart and passion. Patch Theatre has been creating high quality theatre for 4-8 year olds since 1972, and in that time has presented to around 2 million children and their parents in Australia and across the world including US, Canada, Singapore, Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Patch is very much motivated by the transformational power of curiosity and imagination, in our children which hopefully remains into adulthood. We go on a fabulous journey into what Teena and Geoff were like as children, to some tips and tricks to keep the child like mind alive well into adulthood. Ginny discusses growing up on a farm in Tasmania, and at 18 years of age heading to work as a Jillaroo in the Northern Territory, learning about hard work and pushing beyond her comfort zone. Ginny started Active Farmers seeing the need for physical and mental support in rural communities. Yet, has been overwhelmed at the level of need and demand. And, the interest in rural communities in building physical and mental fitness, social connection and addressing high levels of suicide. This is a thoughtful discussion about the critical role the not for the profit program has. 50:42Dr Phillip Alvelda, artificial intelligence innovator, technologist and educator, joins us from Washington DC. We joined Dr Alvelda during Hybrid World Adelaide, just after his mind boggling 60 minute deep dive into Artificial Intelligence. Please stay tuned following my interview with Dr Alvelda in today's episode for a fascinating 20 minute slice of his talk about the amazing world of AI. Dr. Alvelda is the founding CEO of Cortical.ai, a U.S. based developer of anthropomorphic AI and machine learning tools, digital twins, and synthetic personalities. We discussed Dr Alvelda's start as a funny Argentinian kid, inspired by man first landing on the moon, and seeded by a childhood of microscopes, models of computers, electronics kits, a Lego obsession, and not getting discouraged by how science was taught at his school. This ignited an positive university experience and love of experimentation, and a career driving technological discovery, including travelling through AI winters and more buoyant times, as the support and technology started to catch up with the dream. Dr Alvelda has worked in areas from incorporating technology into our brains to communicate with each other, to developing AI to be more human, understanding context and learning from memories. How do we allow robots to be more human? And, from the work Dr Alvelda and his associates are doing the question is not if but when! 1:19:28In this episode we sit down with polar explorer, speaker, film maker and environmental scientist Tim Jarvis. A very 'cool' interview in many ways that is likely hard to not be inspire one to fulfil the dreams we had as a child to explore the unchartered and to live a life worth living, even if it all seems scary. Tim's latest focus project is 25zero - please click here https://www.25zero.com/ for more! As it says on the web site ... "25 mountains at the equator had a glacier at the time of the UNFCCC treaty in 1992. Most of them will be melted completely away within 25 years. This is our last chance to tell their stories." In today's interview we hear about how Tim's 'explorer club' as a young boy has guided his conquering of Antarctica, including replicating Sir Douglas Mawson's and Sir Ernest Shackleton's historic Antarctic expeditions, and a further record breaking Antarctic crossing in 1999. Tim is Author of multiple books including Shackleton's Epic (I have read and highly recommend) and Mawson: Life and Death in Antarctica. We go on a fascinating journey from what goes into preparing for such monumental expeditions, how to build a team that's got what it takes, knowing your limits, how it is everyone's responsibility to help save Antarctica and much, much more. 1:08:23Today we meet with Michael O'Brien on the country of Kaurna people. We recognise Kaurna as the Traditional Owner and Custodians of the Adelaide Plains. We recognise the significance for Kaurna people and of their cultural and spiritual relationship with the land, sea, waterways and sky, cultural heritage and beliefs. The acknowledgement is of continuing importance to Kaurna people living today. Thank you to Mickey for the welcome to Kaurna country to start this episode. Mickey is a spokesperson, trainer and leader of the Kaurna people, and a passionate advocate for Aboriginal culture, language and history. Today Mickey shares is story from a young boy as the sixth born male in his family, with a younger sister, to priorities for the future locally and globally. We have a fascinating discussion about generally forgotten Aboriginal history, and the importance of community and giving back to support a positive future. Real People is focused on understanding people and cultural differences, and it was great to gain some insights into the world's oldest living population on earth. We discussed the importance of persevering and educating the history of Aboriginal people, its language and values for future generations. And, that a strong community doesn't just look after the needs of the majority, but also the minority and vulnerable. Aboriginal people continue to have a low life expectancy and are significantly over-represented in many areas illustrating worrying socio-economic gaps. We discuss what we can learn from Aboriginal people including connection to land, sea, waterways and sky, and the importance of only taking what we need and investing in the future. 45:49Today's very cool episode is with Robert Tercek, one of the world's most prolific creators of interactive content, a ground breaking pioneer in digital media since the early 1990's and author of the Vaporized: Solid Strategies for Success in a Dematerialized World. Jason sat down with Robert in the lobby of the Intercontinental Hotel in Adelaide, South Australia while on his visit from Los Angeles. He was in town in his role as Creative Director for Hybrid World Adelaide, a digital entertainment and technology event launched in 2017 that explores the future of a 'hybrid world', where the real and digital worlds collide and ultimately evolve. Robert has held Creative Director, President and other senior executive roles for Sony Pictures, MTV, Oprah Winfrey Network, and now advisory group General Creativity. He has worked across media platforms from web, wireless, interactive television, games consoles, and digital satellite & cable TV, and drove digital media innovation, well before digital and the internet were concepts as we know today. Robert talks with passion at how hard it was initially to convince media executives to embrace digital media, as it was against what they knew and accepted as the way media worked. He shares his story growing up in Cleveland Ohio as curious about everything, and how the rough economy in Cleveland at the time, has shaped his drive for the need for businesses, cities and towns to seek constant reinvention and renaissance. We discuss what can be learnt from businesses such as Apple, the Dollar Shave Club and Burberry, and the importance of blind spot coaching and seeing opportunities in the periphery. And, working with the newly informed and highly empowered consumer. Robert was very generous with his insight, experience and observations.
