Welcome to season 2, episode 39 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast.
This week my guest is Namusaazi Christine (Tinah). Tinah is the Founder of She Unit Uganda.
Tinah grew up in poverty. She speaks to the fact that she went days with no food. Her mom had nine children with no stable income. She knew that if her mom had a decent job, life would have been easier for all of them. After graduating with her certificate in cosmetology because someone sponsored her, Tinah decided that she needed to give back. She Unit Uganda was born to provide skills to women, so that they could create a stable income for their families.
She Unit Uganda reaches out to young women, 15-30 years of age who did not get a chance to go to school or have dropped out of school and are living in absolute poverty. The organization provides all training for free. The students are trained in hairdressing, makeup artistry, pedicure and manicure. Beauticians can easily find work in Uganda if they are properly trained.

These students are also provided training in the making of liquid soap, shampoo and conditioner through outreach programs and the beneficiaries are able to engage in entrepreneurship by selling the products they make.

In a period of three years, She Unit Uganda has reached out to more than 300 young women. After going through trainings students get certified and they can go on to be gainfully employed. The beneficiaries work in beauty salons, from home or engage in mobile salons.

By empowering young women, She Unit Uganda and Tinah has changed not only these individuals lives, but also the lives of their entire families.
Listen in to hear the footprint that Tinah is creating now that she wants to leave behind.
Next week my guest is Shaan Keegan, Managing Director and Founder, Sisterhood SA. We talk about the importance of addressing a critical hygiene need for girls and women living in poverty. Listen in next week to hear the incredible work this organization is doing in South Africa and beyond.
