Don’t Fret

17

Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall;
don’t be happy when they stumble.

18

For the Lord will be displeased with you
and will turn his anger away from them.

19

Don’t fret because of evildoers;
don’t envy the wicked.

All three verses today form one proverb. Verse 17 tells us not to be happy when our enemy fails. Even though it’s not mentioned here, we also shouldn’t feel bad when someone else gets a blessing we don’t. Jesus taught that God blesses people as He chooses, not based on our opinions.

Remember, your enemy is still a person loved by God. While God may not approve of their actions, He still loves them.

One of the Ten Commandments warns us not to covet, and that includes being jealous of others' good fortune. Verse 19 encourages us not to worry about evildoers, even when they seem to succeed. It’s not our job to manage wicked people—that’s God’s job. He’s in control and will handle wickedness.

Think about this: Do you worry when you see wicked people prospering? This passage tells us to let go of that worry—God is still in control.
