On the Season 2 debut of Lost Cultures: Living Legacies , we travel to Bermuda, an Atlantic island whose history spans centuries and continents. Once uninhabited, Bermuda became a vital stop in transatlantic trade, a maritime stronghold, and a cultural crossroads shaped by African, European, Caribbean, and Native American influences. Guests Dr. Kristy Warren and Dr. Edward Harris trace its transformation from an uninhabited island to a strategic outpost shaped by shipwrecks, colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, and the rise and fall of empires. Plus, former Director of Tourism Gary Phillips shares the story of the Gombey tradition, a vibrant performance art rooted in resistance, migration, and cultural fusion. Together, they reveal how Bermuda’s layered past continues to shape its people, culture, and identity today. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices…
We are two men in midlife. We have a lot in common but live very different lives. Laurence is happily married with 2.4 kids and a white picket fence. Karl followed a different path and didn't get married, have kids or put down roots (but he gets to go snowboarding when he wants). Together we explore what life on the other side of the fence is really like. What can we learn from each other? What advice can we give each other? We'll invite guests to reflect on their life to date and consider what they want the second half of their life to look like. We’ll touch on some big topics but with lots of LOLs, a few beers and who knows, maybe even some tears.

In this episode we touch on a topic that affects every man whether you're a parent of not – fatherhood. Our fathers influence us more than we realise. We explore how many of our behaviours and values come from our upbringing, and how our own own Dads shaped us in different ways. We explore our often complicated relationships with them, the generational differences in expressing emotions and what life lessons we have learnt from them – even many years after they have both passed. We share some personal stories, including when we saw rare moments of vulnerability, and how they showed love in their own ways. We end on parenthood, with Karl reflecting on his choice not to have children and Laurence sharing his experiences as a Dad. Last time we left you on a bit of a cliffhanger. In this episode we hear what happened to Karl that New Year's Eve, and how his plans, and world, turned upside down. We get into some thorny topics – health challenges, the pandemic, even death. So tread carefully if you're feeling a little tender today Karl hasn't talked about his experience openly like this before, and it's a raw, personal account. But one we both felt was an important conversation to have. It feels good to have this out there. We hope you enjoy it. In this first episode, Karl and Laurence discuss the journey of starting this podcast, including their initial meeting and the evolution of their friendship. They touch on Karl's ongoing struggle to launch his creative projects and Laurence's role in supporting him. Whilst munching on plentiful snacks over a beer they cover societal expectations, personal growth and why the hell they are doing this in a pub, not a studio (which would have been a hell of a lot easier).
