While the last year of pandemic live has had far-reaching effects on everyone involved, it’s clear that doctors — who already deal with a ton of stress during “normal” times — are burning out fast. Dr. Michelle Thompson set out to work with her colleagues when she saw that people were reaching their limits, quitting their jobs, or worse. Approximately 400 physicians commit suicide a year which is a public health crisis in and of itself. So she started teaching doctors how to manage their stress, take care of themselves, and prevent burnout. Self-Care as Health Care is a movement physicians are implementing to save their own lives to help withstand the rigors of a very difficult field of work. We talk about some of the tools she’s incorporating in hospitals, why doctors are feeling so burdened, and what civilians can do to help.

Dr. Michelle Thompson talks about...

  • How she was inspired to start helping her colleagues with burnout
  • Reaching doctors as students
  • The physician shortage we’re facing
  • What civilians can do to help the doctor burnout program
